doors, rethymno old town, crete
to a documentary photographer, an image is a document in much the same way as a page of writing. every photography holds information that the photographer wants to send to the viewer.
many of the buildings in rethymno old town date back to the time of the venetian occupation of the island (13th to 17th centuries) and the later ottoman occupation (17th to 19th centuries), so there is a fusion of architectural styles. of course, the city is not set in aspic and the modern sits sympathetically alongside the old. but, as the old is replaced with the new, somethng of the past is lost. this project was prompted by one such change. old door cases giving way to new (and often less interesting) ones. so, it is an ongoing record of what will soon be consigned to history.
